Establishment of Qur’anic society is a necessary for effective social system
The Holy Al-Qur’an, the biggest gift by the Creator, the greatest miracle of the Prophet (SAW), the source of Rahmah for the servant, and the key to freedom for mankind. Qur’an is such a book which carries rewards for being read, listened to, learned, taught, acted upon, or for advising someone to act upon it. One will duly receive rewards for striving to establish a Qur’anic society, and becoming successful or dying in the process. There is no other book in this world which motivates its followers in this manner.
The main reason behind the revelation of the Qur’an:
1. Showing the correct path: The Qur’an was sent by Allah (SWT) for the purpose of Hidayah, Rahma, source of glad tidings for the believers and guide for the wayward amongst people.
2. Solution to Problems: Allah (SWT) sent down the Qur’an for mankind and revealed it to guide it from darkness to light, when this guidance was most needed.
3. As a Warning: Alongside reminding mankind of the numerous bounties given by Allah (SWT), the Qur’an also warns and reminds us of the fates of previous people who disobeyed the teachings of their prophets.
4. Dispelling erroneous beliefs: Before the advent of Islam, people in the Arab society used to hold erroneous beliefs, create beliefs as they wished and pass their lives in this manner. They had in them a lot of misconceptions, and Qur’an was revealed to correct these misconceptions.
5. Setting up the concept of Islamic society: The objective of the Qur’an was the dispelling of all man-made concepts of administration of society, and the setting up of the practical Islamic society in its place.
6. Establishing a Shirk-less society: Before the advent of the Qur’an, mankind was in the darkness of Jahiliyya – the society was filled with Shirk (association of other deities with Allah), Kufr (disbelief) and Nifaq (hypocrisy). Qur’an, after its advent, liberated mankind from such ills and brought about an enlightened society.
7. Establishment of justice: Mankind is busy in carrying out injustice, oppression and violation of human rights, due to which there is need of establishing justice and and a just society, an important role which the Qur’an strives to achieve.
8. Development of relationship with Allah the Sustainer: Every Mu’min dreams of meeting his Lord and the Qur’an shows the way to fulfil this dream.
9. Authentication: Al-Qur’an is the greatest and final revealed book, and many other revealed books and messengers had come to this earth. The Qur’an has authenticated the message and the missions of these messengers of Allah.
10. Tazkiya of nafs (Purification of the soul): Qur’an works as a tonic in the purification of the soul from all worldly deeds.
Why do we need a Qur’anic society?
The meaning of the Qur’anic society is that the society will be established according to the rules and guidelines set by Allah (S.W.T). There is no alternative to the following of Allah’s Guidance to establish peace in the society. The Prohet was even unable to establish peace with the establishment of Hilful Fuzul, and he meditated in the Cave of Hera. He established peace through receiving revelation over 23 years. In that peace, the beautiful maiden as able to walk the streets alone, and there was nobody to receive Zakat money. The ruler Abdul Aziz was afraid to give even a date from the state treasury; such was his integrity. When he used to have personal talks or discussions, he would turn off the state-funded lamp. Such peace can only be established in a Qur’anic society.
Some aspects of the Qur’anic society:
The Qur’anic society means that the law is Allah’s, and to Allah belongs Sovereignty, not the people. The state will promulgate laws based on the deliberations and ijtihad of the Islamic thinkers and scholars. The persons making the law based on man-made ideologies do not know the long term effects of such planning, because they do not know the unknown (ghayeb). Only the knower of the ghayeb can actually know what is the actual path to peace for mankind.
A Qur’anic society means that justice will be established in all corners of the state, and even the head of the state will not be above the purview of the law. In the present law system,
the President is above the law during his time of duty. Hazrat Ali (RA.), when he was the Caliph, had gone to court to settle some issues with the Jews. He did not influence the Court. The state will not do injustice over the people, and one person will also abstain from doing injustice over another person.
The Qur’anic society means that all people of the society will be completely loyal to Allah and his Prophet. If the ruler refuses to be loyal to Allah and his Prophet in his rule, then people will abstain from being loyal to him. The people will try to instil a leadership which will be completely loyal to Allah and his Prophet.
The Qur’anic society means that nobody in that society fears any other being in the world other than Allah. The strength of Islam will not be sacrificed for state security, and martyrdom will be chosen instead. The Qur’anic society means that that state will be ruled on the basis of consultation and the power holders will not be authoritarian.
How will the Qur’anic society be established?
The path and methodology of the establishment of a Qur’anic society will be that followed by the Prophet to establish the rule of the Qur’anic society during his time. To establish the Qur’anic society, one must have knowledge of the Qur’an and Hadeeth to understand the Sunnah of the Prophet, and the context of revelation of the above, since a lot of the rulings and revelations in the texts are clear and have specific contexts, and do not change over time, like that of alcohol being forbidden. On the other hand, there are issues dependent upon ijtihad in the light of the basic texts, like in the case of the treatment of the prisoners of the Badr offensive – Islamic authority would perhaps not treat prisoners in the same way today. It is true that the Islamic authority needs to take decisions based on the Qur’an and Hadith. At this time, if the person takes the texts and also takes into understanding the context of the wordings of the text, the correct decision may be arrived at. Even if one wants to understand how to establish a Qur’anic society, he needs to have this kind of knowledge of the texts and their relevant context. In this regard, it needs to be understood that in doing ijtihad, a mujtahid (person who does jtihad) can choose to follow either the easy option or the difficult option from the basic guidelines of the Qur’an and Hadith. However, in choosing the easy options, one should not go against the basic guidelines or principles of Islam. Now I would like to discuss this in more detail.
Allah (SWT) does not establish Islam in any abnormal way, but He can do so through destruction of anti-Islamic forces if He desires. But He does not do so. Allah helps Muslims only when they work towards establishing the Deen of Islam. In the war of the Khandaq, Allah helped the Muslims through giving rainstorm and wind against the disbelievers. In the case of Nimrod, Allah brought forth a small mosquito army against Nimrod’s huge army of soldiers. Firaun was drowned in the river, and Musa (AS) was given access to cross the river without any vessel. Ibrahim (AS) was saved by Allah from the raging fire after being thrown into it by his enemies, after Allah asked the fire to become cool and comfortable for Ibrahim (AS). Again, the Prophet was injured and bloodied by the disbelievers at Ta’if. Allah could have inflicted punishment on the people of Ta’if but He didn’t. At Uhud, the Prophet of Allah was forced to come out and ask, “Who among you will stand as my shield?” and some companions including Hazrat Abu Talha came forward to protect the Prophet, shielding him through their bodies. Today, we need people who can come forward with the same spirit of sacrifice to establish a Qur’anic society, people who are ready to embrace martyrdom with a smile on their lips.
The vision of the Prophet was to bring victory to the Deen. The Sahaba worked to realize that vision of establishing the Deen, due to which they had to suffer a lot of injustice and oppression, and even migrate and leave their own homeland. This sacrifice enabled them to establish an Islamic state within a mere thirteen years, and liberate Makkah, which they had been forced to leave, in a mere eight years. Even today, the establishment of the country ‘Israel’ was done due to the hard work of a mere handful of Jews and their dedication towards establishing their dream. Jews from all around the world gathered there and expelled the Palestinians from their land. They control the politics of Europe and America despite being the minority, because of fact that knowledge, ability and financial prowess in these societies and nations are in the control of a handful of Jews. The Jews leave elite and high jobs and work in small jobs, and move from one country and society to the other in order to fulfil their mission. It is a sad fact that most of the Muslims today do not have any vision, and despite a small minority having a vision forward, there is a lack of a long term planning to fulfil such a vision.
The fact that Qur’an is the biggest gift for mankind, irrespective of race and religion, needs to get manifested in the words and deeds of Muslims, their actions, marriage, business politics and economic actions. The Qur’an has come to bring a change to the life of mankind, and if Muslims, through their actions and deeds, are able to convince the non-Muslims that the welfare of mankind is in the implementation of the message of the Qur’an, then the non-Muslims will be attracted to the Qur’an as well. It is a sad fact that when non-Muslims read the Qur’an and have a positive message of Islam, and get to mix with Muslims, they often get repelled. In this regard, I want to share the story of an Englishman who got attracted to the Qur’an after reading it. He said with sadness that he felt he wanted to accept Islam after reading the Qur’an, but lost that wish after seeing the behaviour and attitude of the Muslims. Another Englishman, after reading the Qur’an was attracted to its message. He contacted the Muslims and asked them show the Qur’an that they read and followed. The Muslims, hearing this, informed him that the Qur’an in his possession was the same Qur’an that they followed. He retorted back with the answer that - no, the Qur’an that you follow and its message is not the reflected in your character. That is why I thought that your Qur’an is of two varieties, one for reading and another for acting upon.
If we want the victory of the Qur’an, then we have to build our lives upon it, and read the Qur’an to understand it, and understand it to act upon it, not just in our personal lives, but also towards establishing its guidelines in the society and the nation. We have to establish the principles of the Qur’an in the society which does not have it, and call people towards the path of the Qur’an with the view to establish the Qur’anic society. We have to debate and discuss the discourse regarding how the rights and dignity of men will be established in a Qur’anic society, in short stressing on the fact that men will not remain slaves of others, all men will be equal in status, there will be no discrimination on race (black-white, Arab- non Arab), and the only measure of respect will be taqwa. Therefore there is no struggle for language or race in a Qur’anic society.
The society that we live in, whether we called it a Jahili society or non-Islamic society, the principles of this society are very deeply rooted- there are jahili elements in education, culture, literature and the arts. In this regard, a Qur’anic society does not mean modification or minimal removal, but a complete overhaul and change of the system. A group of people capable of bringing about this change and transformation towards a Qur’anic society is strongly necessary, not just an option. The longer the delay in producing this group of people, the longer will be the advent of the Qur’anic society. If Muslims are incapable of building themselves up to create a new civilisation, then Allah will not confer power into the hands of the Muslims.
The need for Qur’anic society must be shared with the society and public support must be built in this regard. For this, the ills of the current society must be emphasized upon, and the best replacement for such ills in the Qur’anic society must be emphasized. It must be remembered that the fundamental change envisaged in a Qur’anic society does not mean that everything will be changed in terms of infrastructure and framework. There are many aspects in the current society that can remain under a Qur’anic society. There will be a philosophical and ideological change in everything in a Qur’anic society, while structural change will be related to acceptance and ease of the general public. The changes required to ensure the peace and happiness of the people of the society, will be the only changes that will be effected.
The rulers of today, although they rule through use or misuse of power, also have the ability to display their power. Those of us who want to create a Qur’anic society, not only do we lack the means to tackle such rulers, we also lack the courage to display our strength. When they speak in terms of arms and weapons, the answer cannot lie in giving statements and speeches. The answer to the language of arms is through arms. The amount and number of arms may vary, but lower quality of arms is unacceptable. We need nuclear arms against nuclear arms, not sticks and slings. Yes, it is true that Allah may give Muslims victory without any arms, or He may not grant us any victory despite having a lot of arms. Although victory is not attained through His Rahmah, it is true that even victory follows a method, a Sunnah of Allah, and without following that Sunnah, victory is not granted. If He had violated that, then Allah would have given victory to his Prophet at Ta’if, Uhud against the disbelievers and no blood would have been shed. The Prophet took the requisite military preparations according to the best of his capacity at Badr, and was helped to victory by Allah’s Grace over the numerically superior forces of the disbelievers. Even today, Allah is ready to help Muslims with his angels, but there is the need for true iman (faith) and relevant measures against the enemies of the Qur’an.
Whenever the question of establishment of a Qur’anic society has come about in the Qur’an, the question of sacrifice of the self (or life) and wealth has come. This means one should give time and energy, and also wealth for this cause. The disbelievers run after material wealth in this world, not caring about whether that would be haram or halal. Muslims, on the other hand, have to be cognizant of whether the wealth is acquired through permissible or halal means, and Islam encourages that. For this reason, a truthful honest trader is identified as the friend of Allah’s Prophet, because a lot of similar projects need to be taken while establishing an Islamic society, where a lot of money is required. To create a public platform, a lot of public oriented projects need to carried out. We need to take not just political projects for the public, but also welfare projects to help the public. That is why there needs to be sacrifice of a portion of halal wealth to help in the establishing projects for the Qur’anic society. According to my knowledge, there are a lot of Jewish companies that sacrifice one day’s worth of profit every week for the sake of Israel. Muslims on the other hand, are not spending on such issues at all, or spending on less worthy issues, or simply wasting their wealth. Whether Muslims as a whole do it or not, if a handful of people do it, then it will be seen that this small act will inspire some big change within the society.
The present world has advanced a lot in terms of information technology. It is not possible to control the modern world without it. During the time of the prophet, there was no mobile phone, thus it was difficult for the disbelievers to even imagine how revelation could even come to the Prophet from above. When the angel Gabriel used to bring the the revelation. no one used to see it, so many disbelievers at the time used to be confused over whether the Qur’an was the word of Allah or Muhammad himself. The invention of the mobile phone negates that argument, even though atheists still give that argument, although I believe that they argue simply for the sake of argument. The understanding of the Qur’an during this age of technological advancement has become easier, but so have the challenges and responsibilities in establishing the Qur’anic society increased. Instead of arguing over whether these technologies are haram or halal, we need to go forward and create much more technological advancements, or gain the abilities to do so. The West does not give importance to the Muslims due to their lagging behind in the area of technology. The West which is so technologically advanced today, used to come to the Muslims one day for the purposes of knowledge, and today they have become highly advanced in knowledge. Today, we Muslims are poor in economy and also in knowledge, and the poverty in knowledge is much serious than in economy.
We need to thoroughly understand the society in which we want to establish the Deen. We need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of such a society. Allah (SWT) did not narrate the histories of the past societies in the Qur’an just for no reason, but there are a lot of lessons for us in these stories. The history and lesson of the of story of Fir’aun is there to prove that Allah is able to destroy the Fir’auns of today as well. Only required is someone with the character and faith of Musa (AS), and the will to establish Allah’s way on his earth.
What needs to be done by those wanting to establish the Qur’an:
Those who want to establish the Qur’anic society ned to acquire the ability and habit to observe and evaluate their own actions by themselves. They need to leave out the faults of yesterday, and look forward to establish a better fault-free life towards the future. It is written in the Qur’an the faults of the Muslims at Badr and Uhud; the reason for stating these faults was not to shame anyone, but to provide a lesson so that the future generations would not make the same mistakes again. We need to thus sometimes evaluate the methodologies followed today to find out if we are making any mistakes. This however, does not mean that the countries where the Islamic movements are not being successful, are a failure in terms of methodology! The movement in a country may fail even if the work methodology is perfect and well defined. The natural example of this is that of prophets and messengers of the past, who were unable to prevail despite being upon the right methodology. So it would not be right to be depressed by the failure of movements today. The truth is that the Shaytan works in this manner to inactivate a group of activists within a movement.
Sometimes, it may be seen that some people become very excited on achieving very little in terms of success. During the Uhud campaign, if the Muslims had held their resolve in the second part of the campaign as they had in the first, they would not have had to face the defeat. Therefore, it is not right to think we have won the war, if we simply win a small battle. We have to remember that the enemy may strike again in a bigger manner even if we win the primary battle. A good example would be the Iranian revolution and what transpired after it. The enemy may attack and try to weaken not just from the outside, but from within inside as well. For this we always should be alert and vigilant.
Obstacles are bound to come when we speak of the Qur’an, and the Prophet’s example and history is testament to fact that forces against the Qur’anic society will come together to prevent a Qur’anic society from being established. In this regard, it is not unusual for leadership to be stripped of citizenship, deported or detained incommunicado. The supporters may have to do hijrah (emigrate), face business and and also financial losses. There may be the use of fear and greed to wean people away from the movement to establish a Qur’anic society. At this junction, there may even be conspiracy to kill those still involved with the Islamic movement, and be mis-labelled as terrorists, traitors, reactionaries to the public. In this light, we have to take steps to ensure that the ones striving for a Qur’anic society do not lose heart or leave their role.
To establish a Qur’anic society, one may also have to take the time-befitting step to form coalitions with like-minded parties and groups. The Medina Charter that the Prophet drew up after emigrating to Medina from Makkah did not all include parties that believed in his message, nor did the Charter seek to establish Qur’anic law. Instead, the Charter focused on setting up a common front to provide for the defence of Medina against any attack. In fact, the Prophet established his authority over Medina through such pacts of unity and defence. And this establishing of authority was instrumental in the future to establish the Deen. Sometimes, the other sides of a pact may renege on it, and proper defensive measures need to be taken to prevent this from occurring, or from dealing with its aftermath.
Sometimes, a decision is taken by the leadership, which seems problematic or humiliating at the time, as during the time of the Treaty of Hudaibiya, when Hazrat Umar (RA) asked the Prophet, “Are you not the Prophet of Allah? Then why are you making such a humiliating treaty?” It is true that the historic treaty of Hudaibiya paved the way for the victory of Makkah. Thus, it is not right that one should rise up in anger at a leadership decision that one disagrees with. Moreover, the leadership should deal judiciously and understandingly with dissent and anger arising from such a situation.
Those who able to contribute with energy, time, money and intellect to the establishment of the Qur’anic society should thank Allah for this opportunity. They should not be inflicted with pride over their involvement vs. those still not involved with such a movement, and should be cautious against such sentiments. Those Muslims who believe in personal observance of religion and are against the Qur’an being part of state mechanism and rule, should be gently treated and given dawah in a friendly manner, and one should be big hearted enough to overlook any harsh attitude from these Muslims. We need to remember that such Muslims may even one day become the leaders of the the very Qur’anic movement they today oppose, as in the case of Umar (RA), who accepted the very Qur’an he came to oppose. Thus, among those who talk of opposing the Qur’an today lie a section who can be the good leaders of this very Qur’anic movement tomorrow, and may be seen as part of the Qur’anic movement in time insha Allah.
Being part of the Qur’anic movement does not mean that one forgets his/her family, spouse, children in the process. The Qur’an that we speak of needs to be observed within our own souls first, and then the message needs to be passed on to our family, children and relatives. That is why Allah commanded us to save ourselves and our family from the Hellfire in the Qur’an, as asked us to give dawah to our families and relatives first before giving it to others. However, it is observed that we are so busy in propagating to people outside, that we have no time to spread the message amongst our own relatives, friends and family, which is obligatory, and cannot and should not be wilfully ignored.
Those who are trying to establish the Qur’anic society of the Prophet, need to learn from the Prophet’s system and methods of giving dawah. The Prophet never used to give long speeches or sermons to deliver his message, and used to give compact yet meaningful messages of enlightenment to the people. At the same time, he would not speak of many issues at once, but used to focus on one issue and explore it thoroughly.
People today are far from the main objective of the revelation of the Qur’an. We ask Allah to allow us to understand and implement the message of the Qur’an and the attain the objectives of the Qur’anic society and help establish it. May Allah grant us the ability to serve the Qur’an according to its true merit. Ameen.
