Condemnation and Protest by Chhatra Shibir Over Killings at DU and JU

Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir has strongly condemned and protested the killings that took place at Dhaka University (DU) and Jahangirnagar University (JU) through mob violence.

On Wednesday, September 18, at Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall of Dhaka University, a mentally unstable person was beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of theft. He later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. At Jahangirnagar University, on the night of July 16, Shamim Ahmed (Shamim Molla), a former student leader of Chhatraleague from the 39th batch, and one of the key figures behind an attack on students, was beaten by the students and handed over to the university’s proctorial body. He later died while undergoing treatment. The former leader had previous accusations against him for drug dealing, land grabbing, armed violence, and extortion.

In a joint statement, Central President Manzurul Islam and Secretary General Zahidul Islam said, "In the post-revolutionary situation, vengeance and retaliation are becoming a culture, which can overshadow the successes achieved at the cost of the lives of more than a thousand students and the general public. No matter how severe the crime, the perpetrator must be brought to justice under the law. The mob killings at DU and JU are clear reflections of the extreme weakness and failure of the country's law and order. We strongly condemn and protest these tragic killings."

The leaders called on all sections of society to unite against violence. They said, "To establish a healthy society, we must all raise our voices against political violence, killings, and terrorism."

Chhatrashibir leaders expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and made a heartfelt appeal to the student community to stop all forms of mob justice or mob killings. They also urged law enforcement agencies to abandon inaction and take effective measures to prevent mob justice by ensuring the rule of law.
