Shibir condemned and protested against five years imprisonment of Khaleda Zia in a false case

The government is in process of putting the last nail in the coffin of democracy

-Chhatra Shibir

Chhatra Shibir gives statement condemning verdict against the former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who has been given five years in jail in a false case.

Chhatra Shibir central president Yasin Arafat and Secretary General Mobarak Hossain said in a joint statement that Begum Khaleda Zia is the victim of political vendetta of the illegal government. The verdict in the false and provocative case against her has been given according to pre planned move by the government, which is basically a reflection of the earlier speeches by the MP’s and ministers of the government. The government ministers and MP’s had said that Khaleda Zia will go to jail even if the proceedings of the case are pending. It proves that the verdict is predetermined. The verdict has again tarnished the history of justice. People expected that the court would justly handle the case of the former PM. But sadly here also the nation has again seen injustice.

The leaders said that the corruption case against which Khaleda Zia was given penalty, Sheikh Hasina has worse cases as compared to the former. There were 15 cases of corruption filed in the name of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, including Naiko until she came to power in 2009. Although Hasina withdrew all the cases in her own name, she had kept the false cases against Khaleda Zia for implementation of political vendetta. Again it is proved that there is no freedom of the courts of law, but that law is being used as a tool for suppression of opposition. This verdict does not represent justice, but the questionable verdict has been given to please a particular party. The countrymen reject the verdict.

The leaders further said that the people of the nation have turned away from the government due to the mismanagement by this government. People from all walks of life are very angry about this government. Although the illegal government knows the lack of public support for it, it is desperate to retain power. As a result, the judiciary is also being used as a tool to implement the political agenda of the government. They have no confidence in the democratic process and the people. Therefore, using the law courts and implementing political vendetta, the government is planning the conspiracy of holding unilateral elections.

The leaders said the judiciary of the country is now on the verge of destruction. It is extreme inhumanity to deprive ordinary people, including leaders of opposition from justice due to political reasons. In the same way, national leaders have been hanged through biased verdict in politically motivated trials by a questionable tribunal and judicial process. Today's verdict is the continuation of this process, a path which would facilitate the lack of the rule of law and the path to the dictatorship to establish BAKSAL. We urge the government to release all national leaders including Begum Khaleda Zia and stop the political farce and oppression in the name of this trial.
